Myofascial Trigger Point Dry Needling
Dry Needling Myofascial Trigger Points
Myofascial trigger points are the most commonly mis-diagnosed in chronic pain patients. they have been described by Dr Travel and Dr Simons as
“hyper-irritable spots in the skeletal muscles“.
A trigger point is very tender on compression and has a referred pain, can also have motor dysfunction, can cause headaches, backache and can pretty much mimic any pain in the body.
Dry needling is a great technique for the treatment of myofascial trigger points. It involves the use of “acupuncture needles“ but should not be confused with traditional acupuncture...
Over the years research has showed that myofascial trigger points can be injected with a large number of substances such as “ lidocaine ” with very good results but also research showed that in many circumstances it was just the needle alone eliciting a release effect on the trigger point itself, even better dry needling has virtually no side effects, some soreness is expected after treatment for up to 2-3 days and in some cases bruising may appear .
